The Long Road Home Most people will instantly recognize this iconic scene from the movie Forrest Gump, and the moment we decided on a trip to Utah, visiting this spot became an absolute must. Capturing a clean shot here requires an immense amount of patience, as it is a photographer's nightmare of tourists constantly stopping and running into the middle of the active highway for social media photos. While my original plan was to digitally remove the car driving down the asphalt, the moment I looked closer at the frame, I knew it had to stay. That single vehicle provides the perfect sense of scale, contrasting human travel against the massive, timeless buttes rising up in the distant horizon.
The Dawn Parade Captured on the exact same morning as Turret Rising, this shot was a beautiful moment of pure happenstance. After packing up my tripod from the morning's main shoot, I was heading down the short trail toward the parking lot when the spectacular morning light suddenly hit the Parade of Elephants formation perfectly. This was no place for a tripod setup—I simply had to move quickly, find the right angle, raise the camera, and snap the shot before the fleeting light changed.
Grand Landscape (or Landscape Arch) If you are traveling through the southeastern desert of Utah, this incredible monument is an absolute must-see right alongside Delicate Arch. Spanning a colossal 300 feet in length while thinning down to a mere five feet at its narrowest point, the structure defies every law of engineering. While your very first view along the trail doesn't quite do the scale justice, this specific vantage point lays the entire panoramic span right out in front of you. Standing there, I had to admit to myself that this geological wonder really shouldn't be standing at all, as I have never seen a landscape that felt so overwhelmingly grand yet so terrifyingly
Skyline Glow This shot captures the exact moment my patience paid off during a spectacular desert sunset. I stood waiting by my tripod watching the shadows slowly stretch across the canyon floor. Right on cue during peak golden hour, the setting sun hit the perfect angle and completely ignited the massive sandstone arch in a brilliant, fiery radiance.
Glow of the Balanced This photograph represents my second attempt at capturing Balanced Rock during the golden hour, after a previous sunset was completely ruined by heavy clouds covering the sun. Even without the bad weather, I hadn't been happy with my initial composition, which left the massive boulder trapped against a completely blank, cloudless sky. Returning on a later date, I moved to a completely different vantage point and watched in awe as the creeping red evening light illuminated an ancient sandstone monolith that, by all laws of physics, really should not exist.
Sunset Eyes Capturing this shot was a last-minute decision, and I never expected to walk away with something so spectacular. Sunset in this specific area of Arches National Park is incredibly photogenic, transforming the entire landscape into a vibrant, glowing red. While waiting for the light, I distinctly remember chatting with a father and son, explaining the physics of how sunlight traveling through a lower atmosphere accentuates the brilliant crimson tones of the rocks right before the sun disappears.
Turret Rising Captured during the quiet morning hours, this shot came from knowing exactly how the light would behave while everyone around me was focused elsewhere. While the crowds eagerly waited for the sun to rise directly through the North Window, I sat patiently waiting for the sun to clear the entire Windows complex and strike Turret Arch from behind. My plan worked perfectly, allowing me to document the golden morning light slowly creeping from top to bottom while the giant Windows structures cast a dramatic shadow across the base. This was the shot I awoke for, and it is the shot I got.
The Hidden Gateway Tucked away behind towering rock walls, this hidden sanctuary evokes a sudden, breathtaking sense of discovery as the desert heat gives way to cool, quiet shade. Squeezing through a narrow sandstone slot reveals a soft, beach-like floor of deep red sand that invites you to pause and connect intimately with the raw earth. Underneath the low, sweeping span of Sand Dune Arch, a profound stillness washes over you, leaving you feeling entirely small yet deeply a part of this ancient, sheltered canyon.
On the Edge Perched precariously between a towering rock wall and a sheer drop, this narrow dirt track pushes you right to the brink of fear and exhilaration. Looking down into the endless, sun-baked abyss forces an immediate, heart-pounding awareness of just how fragile you are in this immense wilderness. Yet, gripping the wheel on this exposed ledge replaces that vulnerability with an overwhelming rush of awe, leaving you completely captivated by the wild freedom of the open canyon.
Delicate Gold This perspective was captured from the upper viewpoint, sitting about a mile away from the arch across a massive canyon. The name "Delicate Arch" is incredibly misleading, as it often leads people to believe they are looking at a small, fragile structure. It is not—in reality, it is a colossal monument, a fact that truly hit home for me when I noticed a group of people standing directly beneath it, their shapes completely swallowed by the massive scale of the opening.
Green Sunset This photograph captures the final evening of my trip to Utah, following a long and patient wait for the perfect light. We were incredibly fortunate that smoke from the nearby Bears Ears wildfire didn't obscure the dramatic view of the Green River canyon below. I was originally focused on shooting toward the Needles region, but the moment this spectacular light hit the gorge, I made a quick 200-foot run with my gear to secure this exact shot.
Sandstone Sunset This photograph captures the moments directly leading up to Green Sunset, documenting the electric energy of the canyon just before the light fully dropped. Before rushing along the rim to frame the river gorge, I was transfixed by how the low-angle sun ignited the sheer sandstone cliffs to our left. The air was thick with the scent and soft haze of the nearby Bears Ears wildfire, which acted like a massive atmospheric filter. It intensified the fiery, crimson glow along the canyon lips while casting the deep labyrinths below into rich, dramatic shadow. This frame represents the exact slice of time right before the final scramble where the sheer scale of Canyonlands felt entirely overwhelming.
